NUCLEAR ENGINEERING RESEARCH GROUP (NERG)

 

 

NERG is devoted to Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA) research since 2007. The aim of NERG is to go in depth in the knowledge and the application of the Probabilistic Safety Assessment as a Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) management tool. NERG's challenge is to contribute to the improvement of NPPs safe operation and the safe supply of Electric energy through Nuclear Energy.

NERG has a tight collaboration agreement with a Spanish Nuclear Power Plants’ licensee which provides guidance, and both technical and data support. The collaboration began in 2007 and has been renewed twice since. Thus, NERG research activities cover the future needs of actual Nuclear Power Plant engineering.

Research activities

 

Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation Pilot PSA

NERG is developing a level 2 Pilot PSA methodology and model for assessing the residual risk of Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installations (ISFSI). Important issues NERG has had or has to face are the treatment of external hazards, and the treatment of human error.

 

Spent Fuel Pool level 1 PSA

One of the main research activities of NERG is the development of Spent Fuel Pools (SFPs) level 1 PSAs both for full power and non-full power operation. How to introduce the post-Fukushima measures is still a challenge for SFP PSAs. The SBO scenario is analyzed in detail in the models developed by NERG.

 

Database and Data analysis task assessments

The analysis of PSA databases and the development of tools to improve the Data analysis task is one NERG’s research activities. A tool to identify possible infant mortality failures included in the PSA database is now in development.

 

Fire PSA risk management tools development

One of the main NERG activities is to develop tools which provide meaningful risk information related to the Fire PSA. Examples are Unavailability Matrix containing Fire Protection Systems and Key Safety Functions, and the development of a Risk Monitor.

 

Outage Key Safety Functions assessment using PSA

Research has devoted part of its research to the assessment of Outage Key Safety Functions configurations and CLOs from Risk point of view.

 

Academic and scientific production

 

NERG is active and keen to accept master students, PhD students, and students for research stays. One Doctoral dissertation and more than fourteen Master theses have been developed in the past four years by both national and international students. Nowadays, two Doctoral dissertations, and several Master theses, are in development.

NERG’s academic production is supported by its scientific production. More than 15 papers and posters have been published in the last years both at national and international level. Papers presented in the International Topical Meeting on Probabilistic Safety Assessment of American Nuclear Society (ANS) stand out among others.
